GRAND ENTRANCE - Office Lobbies That Are Worth the Wait

By Christine Calvin

Miltenyi Biotec, a company that develops and manufactures products in the fields of cell biology, immunology and regenerative medicine, drew inspiration for its U.S. base in Auburn from its German headquarters.  “The color palette is driven by current trends in European interior design,” says Design Director Christine Horton.  “It’s sleek and modern.  We chose a modular seating system with metal legs to pull in an industrial, clean feeling.  We wanted to stay away from things that looked fussy or overdesigned.”  One of the primary attributes of the space is natural light and the use of glass, which allows anyone standing in the lobby to see through the reception area, into the work space and out the back windows.  Evergreen trees and landscaping outside are mature and give visitors and workers alike a sense that they are a bit removed from the bustle of nearby commerce and traffic.   “It plays to the idea of having a very open atmosphere and being able to see all the way through the building, “Horton says.  “The combination of clean lines, smooth textures and rounded features works together to make this a really interesting space.  It’s a fresh look that speaks to their European roots.”
